 The Southwestern University Pirates athletic department hired Kaitlyn Hafdell in August of 2019 as the women's lacrosse head coach.

In three seasons as head coach, Hafdell has posted three straight winning seasons for an overall record of 23-11 and a 67.6 percent win percentage. She led the Pirates to a 4-3 record in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, and a 6-5 record in 2021. In 2022, the Pirates broke the porgram record for wins in a season. Hafdell led the team to thirteen wins and three losses, surpassing the previous record of 8-8 by five wins. The Pirates maintained a perfect at-home record of 8-0 and were runner-ups in the SCAC Championship game. 

Under Hafdell, Southwestern has had ninteen all-conference selections, including fifteen first-team selections. Hafdell has coached four SCAC player of the year recipients including two SCAC Defenders of the Year (Brooke Folliard 2021; Emma Pertuit 2022), Midfielder of the Year (Emma Pertuit 2021), and Attacker of the Year (Raven Garcia 2022).

Hafdell was an assistant coach for the Rhodes College Lynx before coming to Southwestern. Hafdell helped lead the Lynx to three consecutive SAA conference championships and two NCAA Sweet 16 round qualifiers (2017, 2018). During her time there, Rhodes earned its first-ever No. 1 regional ranking (2018) and the program's first All-American (2018).

Prior to that, Hafdell was the lacrosse head coach at St. Joseph's High School in Greenville, South Carolina for the 2015-16 school year. During that time, she was also the head coach for the club team Greenlight Lacrosse.

Hafdell graduated from Slippery Rock University in 2014 with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health and a minor in Coaching. As a student-athlete, she was named Team MVP, Defensive Leader, and all-conference in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
