Pirates Have No Answer for Occidental in Opener

GEORGETOWN - The Southwestern University women's lacrosse team opened up the 2018 season on Saturday afternoon, but had no answer for the visiting Occidental Tigers, falling 23-5 at Varsity Field.

Occidental out shot the Pirates 36-10 while forcing 23 Southwestern turnovers. THe Pirates had 12 ground balls and won 11 draw controls on the afternoon.

Southwestern got off to a great start as senior Brenna Jobb opened the season with a goal just 45 seconds into the contest as the Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead. However, Occidental had an answer and kept the momentum as they rattled off 17 of the next 18 goals in the first half ot take a 17-2 lead at the break.

The Pirates fought in the second half, but it would not be enough as the Tigers took the big road win to open their season.

Jobb scored two goals to go with two draw controls while junior Hayley Donnelly added a goal and an assists. Junior Madison Godleski and sophomore Grace Maynard each added a goal a piece while junior Ronni Winter had an assist.

Junior Julia Tape and senior Lacey Bowersox each had two caused turnovers while sophomore Haley Hurt had four ground balls. Hurt had six saves in one half while sophomore Claire Harding added two saves in the second half.

THe Pirates start the young season 0-1, but look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon at Varsity Field as they welcome in the University of Dallas at 2 PM.
