Southwestern WLAX fall in game of runs

Southwestern put together multiple strong offensive runs but it was Gordon College who closed the game hot as the Pirates fell 15-11 at home on Tuesday.

Gordon opened the contest with three goals in the first five and a half minutes and seemed to have the game under control until Courtney Ragland took matters into her own hands with three goals and one assist in the next ten minutes to pull SU within two, 6-4, with 14:12 to play in the first.

Breanna Jobb's unassisted goal, her second of the game and season, evened the score 6-6 with just under ten minutes to play. Southwestern took the lead with 5:03 remaining on a free position goal by Allison Cook. Gordon's Kristin Fitzgerald snuck one home with less than a minute on the clock to send the game into the break tied 7-7.

The teams traded goals throughout the first six minutes, but GC closed the game on a 6-2 run to hand Southwestern the loss.

The Pirates had four fewer shots, 26-22, and three fewer ground balls 44-41. Gordon won 18 of the 28 draw controls and converted on three of five free position shots while SU went just five for ten.

Southwestern (4-4) was led by Ragland with four goals and one assist. Adrienne Dodd had an outstanding game defensively with seven ground balls and four caused turnovers. Jordan Little suffered the loss with seven saves on the evening. Gordon (2-2) was led by Jessica Castelline with five goals and two assists.

The Pirates remain at home to face Puget Sound on March 20th at 6 p.m.
