ALBION, Mich. – SU women's lacrosse may be entering the tail end of their inaugural season, but are playing their best yet with a 17-14 win over Albion on Sunday.
Just as they did on Friday, Southwestern shot out of the gate and took a 3-0 lead thanks largely to Emma Albin who scored the first and assisted on the second goal. Albion scored their first nine minutes into the game which seemed to spark them offensively, but Southwestern always had the answer as Albin scored again, her third of the half, with eight seconds left, sending SU into the break up 9-7.
The second half started the same way with three goals for the Pirates, two coming from Kaitlyn Campbell, to give SU a five goal lead, 12-7, with 23 minutes remaining. The lead held with short scoring bursts from the Pirates as Albion's comeback fell short as they closed the game with five unanswered goals to arrive at the 17-14 win.
Campbell led SU with five goals while Albin added in four goals and one assist, Natalie Rivera three goals and one assist and Allison Schmitt three goals and two assists. Albion's Ashley Glenn led all scorers with seven goals.
The shot count showed just how tight this game was as both teams recorded 26 shots and 13 turnovers. Southwestern trailed 21-11 in ground balls, but converted on 13 of their 16 clears while Albion went just 11-16.
Southwestern moves to 6-8 on the season while Albion falls to 5-4 overall. The Pirates hit the road again as they close their season on the West coast, facing Puget Sound on Friday and Loras in a neutral-site game in Tacoma, Wash. on Sunday.
