Pirates return to winning ways behind dynamic duo

OLIVET, Mich. - Kaitlyn Campbell and Allison Schmitt combined for 11 points in Southwestern's 14-9 win over Olivet College on Friday night.

It took just moments for the Pirates to seize control of the game, starting with winning the opening draw, taking the first shot and then scoring the first goal four minutes into the game to kick-off a 4-0 run in the first seven and a half minutes.

Olivet recovered from the early onslaught and got back in the game, cutting SU's lead to three 4-1, but the Pirates quickly punched back with three more goals to lead 7-1 with 1:56 to play in the half.

Without much time on the clock Olivet closed the half on a high note with two goals to pull within four, 7-3, by halftime.

Southwestern opened the scoring in the second half and held Olivet off with tough defense, maintaining at least a three goal lead midway through the second half. The Comets had one final charge and pulled within two goals, 11-9 with 7:19 to play, but Southwestern closed the game with three unanswered goals to secure the win.

Campbell led all scorers with five goals while Schmitt scored four and assisted on two others. Adrienne Dodd and Christina Rosendahl also posted two assists in the win. Campbell and Natalie Rivera led SU with three ground balls each while Rivera also caused a game high three turnovers.

Southwestern led 28-17 in shots, but trailed 15-12 in ground balls and committed one more turnover. The Pirates absolutely dominated the draw control, however, winning 21 of the 25 to control the possession game.

With the win SU improves to 5-8 on the year. They remain in Michigan to face Albion College on Sunday at 11 am CST.
