Pirates drop final game of opening home stand

GEORGETOWN, Texas – After a strong start to the season the Southwestern women's lacrosse team lost their final game of the five game homestand 19-4 to Eastern.

Southwestern controlled the opening draw and the first few minutes of the half, but it was Eastern that struck first on a free position attempt three and a half minutes into the game. The Eagles quickly scored two more to put SU down 3-0 early.

Kaitlyn Campbell does what SU fans have come to expect from her, scoring her first goal in response with 22 minutes to play. Eastern had the answer, however, to push their lead back to three, 4-1.

The Eagles didn't stop there as they added five more goals to widen the gap. Campbell finally got SU back on the board as she added her second goal with 5:27 remaining in the half, but Eastern wasn't done either as they put away two more to put SU down 11-1 at the half.

EU started quickly in the second half and piled on the goals the rest of the game until the final buzzer sounded.

Campbell did all the scoring for the Pirates with four goals while Allison Schmitt had two assists. Eastern's Anna Charlebois posted six goals and one assist in the win.

The Eagles dominated the shot count 31-12, but the draw controls were split down the middle at 12 apiece. Southwestern committed 25 turnovers and converted only 7 of 14 clears while Eastern committed 14 turnovers but converted on 14 of 16 clear opportunities.

The loss drops SU to 3-2 on the year while Eastern improves to 2-2. Southwestern hits the road for the first time this season to face George Fox University on Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
