Wome's Golf Wins Second Consecutive Event to Start Season

HOBBS, N.M. — The Southwestern University Pirates women's golf team improved on its first-round performance by three strokes to win the Rockwind Links Intercollegiate, taking first place for the second time in two events.

Sophomore Madison Goldberg made a big move on the second day, improving on her first-round score by five strokes to shoot a 74 and finish second on the individual leaderboard. Goldberg finished tied for second in Par 3 and Par 4 scoring, making 18 pars overall, including five birdies for the event. 

First year Linsey Garza stayed steady, finishing one stroke off her first-round performance with an 80, totaling 159 to finish fourth; scoring four birdies and making 14 pars.

Sarah Lucido made the biggest move for the Pirates, improving by four strokes in Round 2. The first year from Vandegrift catapulted up the standings with an 80 on the second day, moving from 16th into the top 10 at sixth place. 

Senior Emily Campbell finished in 17th place, scoring a combined 171 to finish 27 over par. Madison Miller rounded out the Pirates' scoring with a 180, tying for 30th place. The Pirates combined for a score of 647, coming from behind eight strokes to overtake Hardin-Simmons University by 17. 

Texas Lutheran University's Summer Swift won the individual event with a 148, finishing four over par and round-best 72 on the second day.

Southwestern will travel to Glen Rose, Texas to compete in the Lady Crusader Invitational on Monday, Sep. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1. They follow that with the four-day Golfweek Fall Invitational in Destin, Fla. from Oct 12-15.
