Gusty winds challenged the women's golfers on day one of the West Region Invitational. Southwestern closed the day in fifth place with 349 strokes.
UT Tyler is leading the tournament with 323 strokes.
Bernice Leonard had a great day despite the tough conditions, posting an eight-over-par 80 to end tied for third. UMHB's McKenzie Ralston is leading the field with an opening round 78.
Lauren Boone closed day one tied for 11th with an 83 and Keeley Coburn posted an 85 to end tied for 18th. Jenny Smith rounded out the Pirates with a first round 101.
Southwestern picks up play on Tuesday to close out the tournament.
