Pirate women in first after day one at SCAC Championships

BOERNE, Texas – Ali Walden fired a first round 76 to help pace the Southwestern University women's golf team Monday as Walden sits in second place and the Pirates hold a five stroke lead a top of the leader board at the 2014 SCAC Women's Golf Championships.

Early morning rain disappeared by noon as the women finished their first round 18 and it not only ended with two Pirates shooting sub-80 scores, but four individuals in the top 10. Lauren Boone finished with a 79 and is tied for third while Bernice Leonard and Alexis Gonzalez finished seventh and tied for eighth respectively.

Walden had a solid round as she carded three birdies in her Monday round at Tapatio Springs Golf Course. She was consistent on both nines at +2 on both sides for a 76 placing her just one shot off the lead behind Jamie Wright of Centenary who fired a 75 Monday. She also holds a three shot lead over teammate Boone and Christine Campbell and Brigette Lee, both of second place Trinity.

Boone started her day at -2 through the first four holes but a double bogey on the par 4 No. 5 pushed her back to even four the round. She closed out her round with a birdie on No. 18 and sits with a 79 – four shots back of the leader.

In the team standings the Pirates are poised to win their second consecutive SCAC Championship and seventh overall. Paired with Southwestern on Tuesday's final round will be Trinity and Schreiner as the Tigers posted a team score of 323. The Mountaineers sit 15 strokes back after a first round 333.

The women will tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday for their final round at the SCAC Championships.
