Walden earns runner-up finish at West Region Invite

GEORGETOWN – Ali Walden was able to fight off the strong winds Tuesday as she earned a runner-up finish at the 2014 Southwestern West Region Invitational at Berry Creek Country Club.

Walden fired rounds of 77-81 to finish with a 158 as she finished one stroke behind Victoria Thane of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Thane posted scores of 75-82 to finish 157 as Taylor O'Rear posted back-to-back scores of 79 to tie Walden with a 158.

Southwestern finished third as a team as Mary Hardin-Baylor took home the team title with a 630. UT-Tyler finished second with a 643 as the Pirates posted a team score of 666 to edge all SCAC foes including Schreiner with a 679.

A trio of Pirates earned top 20 finishes with Keeley Coburn, Bernice Leonard and Lauren Boone joining Walden. Coburn finished tied for 13th with a 169 after as she struggled on day with a 92 after a first round 77. Leonard was consistent through the winds with an identical round of 85 on Monday and Tuesday to tie for 16th in the tournament.

Boone tied for 20th as she fired rounds of 82 and 90 for a tournament score of 172.

Alexis Gonzalez closed out the scoring for the Pirates with an 82-97 to card a 179.

The Pirates will take a week off before returning to the course April 21-22 for the SCAC Championships at Tapatio Springs Resort in Boerne, Texas.
