Coburn Opens Fall Season with Tournament Victory

SEGUIN, Texas - Kelsey Coburn began her senior season in style, winning the Lady Bulldog Fall Classic on Tuesday afternoon with 149 strokes (76-73). The Pirate women in came in 4th place overall with 630 strokes. 

Southwestern's second-round 307 set a new record for the Pirate women's golf team for the lowest single round shot in the program's history. 

Newcomer Bernice Leonard had a great showing in her first collegiate tournament. She was the second highest finisher for Southwestern, coming in tied for eighth place with 155 strokes (79-76). Lauren Boone got off to a rocky start with an opening round 86, but came back strong in the second round to post a 76 and finish in 18th place with 162 strokes. 

Karissa Speck posted an 82 in both rounds to end with 164 strokes and tied for 20th place while Keeley Coburn rounded out the SU team with 173 strokes (89-84) and tied for 35th. 

With the large team the Pirates were able to field a second team. Led by Korey Coburn who shot a 164, including an opening round 77, and finished tied for 20th the SU "B" team finished with 697 strokes and in seventh place. Other team members were Stephanie Scholer (172), Jenny Smith (179) and Katie McCance (182).

The Southwestern team has a week off before heading up I-35 to play in the UMHB Fall Invitational on September 24-25.
