Women's Basketball Can't Overcome First-Half Turnovers in Loss to Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Turnovers, offensive rebounds, and missed free throws plagued the Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team in a 65-62 loss to the Schreiner University Mountaineers.

Cecily Woolfolk was overpowering at times, scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds, including four on the offensive end, to anchor a Pirate offense that found opportunities when it could get into its sets.

Southwestern outscored Schreiner 36-24 in the paint despite missing several opportunities at the rim. The problem was getting the ball there.

The Mountaineers deployed a combination of full court pressure with guard Zahra Cross giving the Southwestern ball handlers very little room to breathe, and a variety of traps to keep the Pirates off balance, creating 14 turnovers in the first half. Most of them were of the live ball variety, leading to a 14-2 Schreiner advantage in fastbreak points and a 31-29 lead at the half.

Southwestern settled down in the second half, committing only three turnovers after the break, but shot just 4-for-14 from the field in the third quarter, falling behind 49-41 on a Gabby Ivarra jumper as time expired in the quarter.

The Pirates made a run in the fourth quarter, led by Woolfolk and Zhazze Brown combining for 13 points on 5-for-11 shooting, but Schreiner reserve Miranda Vallejo scored six of her team-high 20 points to keep the Pirates at bay.

With the loss, the Pirates fall to 3-7 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. Southwestern will host Trinity tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
