Pirates' Offense Stalls In Loss To Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. — The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team got off to a slow start, losing to the Hendrix College Warriors 65-48. 

Noel Pratts scored 18 points off the bench and first year point guard Courtney Maas had 12 points on six shots but the Pirates shot just 26.8 percent overall and no other player had more than five points. 

The Pirates scored just four points in the first quarter and shot 5-for-27 (18.52 percent) for the half, falling behind 38-16 at the break. 

Hendrix College worked inside, shooting 45.2 percent for the half with forward Kessi Jenkins scoring 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting. 

Southwestern University continued to struggle from the field in the second half, shooting just 34.5 percent, but found some offensive punch at the free-throw line, hitting 11-for-13. 

The Warriors outscored the Pirates 34-20 in the paint, getting 18 points and nine rebounds from Jenkins. Vinessa Daniel had 12 points, hitting 6-for-7 from the free-throw line, and Jayla King had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double off the bench for Hendrix. 

The Pirates finished the game shooting 26.8 percent from the field, including 3-for-11 from the 3-point line. Southwestern University committed 12 turnovers to five assists. 

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 1-7 on the season. Southwestern University will host McMurry University on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 2:00 p.m., then begin conference play the following weekend on Dec. 15 against Johnson & Wales University at 1:00 p.m.
