Women's Basketball Earns First Victory Of The Season

SEGUIN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season, defeating the Concordia Texas Tornados 68-52.

Cecily Woolfolk recorded her second consecutive double-double for the Pirates, posting 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Southwestern University center was overpowering inside on both ends of the court, pulling down six offensive rebounds and getting to the line for 10 free-throw attempts on offense, hitting eight, and blocking three shots on defense.

In her second game returning from an injury sustained last season, Tori Carraway shook off some rust, scoring 15 points on 5-for-11 shooting and grabbing nine rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.

The Pirates were dominant on the glass, outrebounding Concordia 59-44 with an 18-9 advantage in second-chance points. Southwestern also forced 17 turnovers, including seven steals, scoring 26 points off turnovers.

Southwestern shot just 29.9 percent from the field but bullied the Tornados to get 36 free-throw attempts, hitting 24 to just 10 made free throws for Concordia.

Kaycie Dunkerley scored 18 points and 11 rebounds for Concordia as the Tornados' only player in double figures.

Chloe Drum had a solid all-around game for the Pirates, recording nine points with seven assists, four rebounds, three steals, and a block. Kelsey Faykus did a lot of the gritty work inside, grabbing nine rebounds with a block.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 1-3 on the season. They'll return to the court tomorrow to play Hardin-Simmons University tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
