Pirates Move Win Streak to Five as Brown Nets Career-High

KERRVILLE, Texas - Sophomore Zhazze Brown scored a career-high 24 points while junior Tori Carraway continued her monster week with 21 points and 14 rebounds as the Southwestern University women's basketball team made it five in a row with a 77-63 road win over Schreiner on Friday evening.

The Pirates shot 27 of 63 (43%) from the field including 20 of 32 (63%) from the line. Schreiner was only 23 of 64 (36%) to go with eight 3-pointers as well as 9 of 10 (90%) from the free throw line.

Southwestern completely owned the glass, outrebounding Schreiner 55-28 including 32 points in the paint and 13 second chance points. The Pirates did not allow the Mountaineers to have a single second chance point. Southwestern had 18 turnovers on the night, but turned Schreiner over 14 times.

Fast starts have been key to the Pirates recent success as they scored 11 points in the first 2:40 thanks to five points from Brown. Southwestern got their lead out to 18-11 with four minutes to play in the quarter, but Schreiner scored the final six points to close the quarter down 18-17.

It was Schreiner gettign the better of Southwestern in the second quarter, opening an 11-4 run to take a 28-22 lead. However, the Pirates closed the quarter on an absolute tear, using the final 6:25 of the half to outscore the Mountaineers 19-4 and take a 41-32 lead into the break. 

Southwestern made their mark in the paint as Carraway and sophomore Cecily Woolfolk took over. Brown connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Pirates all of the momentum at the break.

The Pirates immediately got their lead to double digits in the third quarter and would lead by as many as 11 throughout the quarter. However, leading 51-40, the Mountaineers went on an 8-1 run to cut the deficit down to four. Brown hit a clutch shot at towards the end of the quarter to keep the lead at six.

Again, the Mountaineers would not go away, cutting the deficit to two in the first minute. With the game at 56-54 with 7:27 to play, Southwestern used the next three and a half minutes to go on a 13-0 run as Brown, Carraway, and senior Madison Edwards scored all the points during the run to put the game out of reach for good.

Schreiner could only get as close as eight as Southwestern closed the contest out with a 77-63 win.

Brown on a whole different level, shooting 8 of 12 from the field including all three 3-pointers for the Pirates. She also had four assists and two steals to add to her big night. Carraway was also terrific, notching her fourth double-double and her second straight 20-10 game. Edwards had 11 to go with six boards and two assists. 

Woolfolk scored eight off the bench to go with five rebounds while sophomore Naomi Brown had 10 boards. Senior Brooke Swift had four assists while junior Kelsey Faykus had six points, eight rebounds, and two steals.

For Schreiner, Kendra Brown led the way with 18 points while Kendall Dyal scored 17.

Southwestern moves to 10-11 overall and 6-4 in SCAC play as they are now winners of five straight contests dating back to January 21st. The Pirates will have a tough test tomorrow evening as they take on rival Trinity at 6 PM in San Antonio.
