Pirates Roll Texas Lutheran to Make it Four Straight

SEGUIN, Texas - Junior Tori Carraway scored 21 points to go with 11 boards and three steals and the Southwestern University women's basketball team outscored Texas Lutheran 41-24 in the second half to earn their fourth straight win, defeating Texas Lutheran on the road, 74-46, on Tuesday evening.

Southwestern shot 25 of 63 (40%) from the field and 5 of 14 (36%0 from deep while going 19 of 26 (73%) at the free throw line. On the other end, the Pirates defense gave TLU trouble all night, holding them to 16 of 58 (28%) from the field, 6 of 24 (25%) from deep, and 8 of 13 (62%) at the line. 

The Pirates domianted the boards, outrebounding the Bulldogs 52-33, and forced 19 turnovers, outscoring TLU 30-4 in points off turnovers. Southwestern also held a 36-8 advantage in points in the paint and a 36-10 advantage in bench points.

Southwestern never trailed in the ballgame, jumping out to an 8-2 lead in the first 4:30 of the game. The Pirates began to find their mark inside the paint, taking a 15-9 lead after the first period.

After only scoring four points in the first five minutes of the second quarter, the Southwestern offense awoken, scoring 14 points in the final five minutes to close the half with a 33-22 lead as Carraway scored six in the quarter while senior Madison Edwards and junior Loryn Hernandez each added a three. 

In the second half, Southwestern left no doubt, opening the half on a 15-4 run to take a 48-26 lead. The Pirates continued to dominate throughout the quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 20-9 to take a 53-31 lead going into the final quarter.

The Pirates would lead by as many as 33 points in the final quarter and ended the contest with a 74-46 win, making an emphatic statement on the road and taking control of third place in the SCAC Standings.

Carraway was 6 of 12 from the field and 9 of 11 from the free throw line. Sophomore Cecily Woolfolk scored 11 off the bench to go with two steals while sophomore Zhazze Brown and Edwards each had seven. Hernandez had six including a pair of 3-pointers. Junior Kelsey Faykus pulled down eight boards while senior Brooke Swift dished out six assists. 

Texas Lutheran was led by Cami Davis with 17 points in the contest.

Southwestern moves to 9-11 overall and 5-4 in SCAC play. They will look to keep their streak going into Friday as they head into Kerrville with match-up against the Schreiner Mountaineers. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
