Pirates exact revenge on Crusaders

The Pirates got the revenge they were searching for with a 57-54 win over the University of Dallas at home on Friday night, avenging a three point loss the week prior.

Dallas opened the game with a 6-0 run, but Southwestern quickly responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game. SU dominated the boards with Annie Bourne pulling down five rebounds in as many minutes to keep the run alive.

Madison Edwards' three with 15 seconds to play in the half was matched by UD's Chelsea Cole to bring the game to 26-25 at the half. Southwestern shot 30% from the floor and just 23.1% from three point range while UD went 33.3% from the field and 60% from three point range.

Southwestern held on to a slight advantage as the second half got underway, but Dallas soon pulled ahead with ___ minutes remaining. McKamie Place's three from the top of the key tied the game 46-46 with 8:25 to play. Place hit another with just over six minutes to play to put SU up 51-46.

The Pirates smothered Dallas on defense and allowed almost no second chance looks to maintain a slight advantage. UD clawed their way back into the game from the free throw line, pulling within one point 55-54 with a minute and a half to go.

With a huge defensive stop, the Pirates got the ball back on the far end line with 45 seconds, holding a one point advantage. SU brought the game home from the free throw line as Valerie Logan drained 2-for-2 in a 1-&-1 situation. Dallas brought the ball down the court and snagged the offensive rebound and called a timeout with 11 seconds remaining with the Pirates up three, 57-54.

Despite a few great looks at the hoop, Southwestern held on to the win to improve to 6-2 in the SCAC and 8-11 overall.

Jordan Owens led Southwestern with 15 points as SU shot 36.7% from the floor and 30% from three point range. Bourne added in 12 points and Place 13 in the win while UD's Bustamante posted 19 points in the loss for Dallas.

Bourne led all rebounders with 12 boards, bringing her career count to 1044 and within 40 of the SCAC career rebounding record.

The Pirates remain at home to face Austin College on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
