#18 Whitworth slides past Pirates in second half

Whitworth outscored Southwestern 33-22 in the second half to hand the Pirates a 73-57 loss at home Saturday night.

Teams traded threes to open the game and set a tone early as both shot over 50% from beyond the arc in the opening ten minutes.

Whitworth pushed their lead to ten, 23-13, with 11:16 remaining in the half. Sarah Cowan entered the game and made an immediate impact, capping off SU's run with a steal and layup to put SU in the lead 26-25 with six and a half remaining.

After seven lead changes in the final six minutes, Whitworth went into locker room up five, 40-35.

KC McConnell led all scorers in the frame with 11 points despite seeing just seven minutes of action due to foul trouble.

Whitworth opened the second half with a 13-4 run to pull ahead further in the first five minutes.

Southwestern struggled to find a rhythm and WU extended their lead to 17, 62-45, with 11 minutes remaining.

Ultimately, turnovers cost SU as they were never able to regain ground with the clock winding to a close. Southwestern committed 24 turnovers with 18 Whitworth steals.  

SU shot 41.5% from the floor for the game and was led by Annie Bourne's 20 points. Bourne added in a game high 12 boards for her second double-double of the season. Owens added 13 points.

McConnell led all scorers with 28 points for Whitworth.

Southwestern falls to 1-6 on the year while Whitworth remains undefeated at 6-0. SU has a much deserved break and return to the court to face Hardin-Simmons University on December 13th at 5:30 pm in Abilene, Texas.
