Hilltoppers sneak past Pirates in Austin

Southwestern fell 69-58 to NCAA Division II St. Edward's University in Austin on Wednesday night. The Pirates matched the Hilltoppers in made field goals, but made 10 fewer free throws and committed eight more turnovers.

St. Edward's scored the first five points of the game, but it didn't take long for Southwestern to get in the game as Madison Eschle's three tied the contest 9-9.

SEU pulled ahead and took a 34-23 advantage into the locker room.

Jordan Owens kicked off the second half with a jumper to pull SU within nine, 34-25. The Hilltoppers led by as many as 15 midway through the second half,  but a feisty SU team refused to go away and pulled back within four, 57-53, with six minutes to play on a three from McKamie Place.

That is as close as Southwestern would get, however, as St. Edward's went 9-10 from the free throw line in the final three and a half minutes to hold off the Pirates.

Jordan Owens continues her scoring dominance with a game high 20 points on 7-11 from the field and 1-3 from three point range, 5-6 from the free throw line. Madison Eschle added in 10 points as the Pirates shot 41.2% from the floor and 33% from three point range. Annie Bourne added in a game high 11 rebounds.

SEU was led by Mileka Loydrake's 19 points as they shot 32.3% from the floor and 23.8% from three point range, but made 21 of 24 free throws while SU had just 14 attempts from the charity stripe. 

Southwestern slides to 1-5 on the season while St. Edward's improved to 5-1. The Pirates return home to face Whitworth College on Saturday at 5:30 pm.
