Quick Start Leads to Big Win

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Southwestern stormed out of the gates in their first game after the holidays to win easily 95-42 over Blackburn College on Friday evening. 

The Pirates opened the game on a 30-8 run in the first six and a half minutes of the contest and were never threatened as they continued to extend their lead throughout the game. The Pirates scored a monstrous 53 points in the opening frame to take a 31 point lead into the locker room. 

It was much of the same in the second half once SU got rolling again. Blackburn was forced into 32 turnovers for the game with Southwestern posting 18 steals. Not only were the Pirates dominate defensively, but they were +13 on the boards, pulling down 61 rebounds on the evening. 

Five Pirates were in double figures for Southwestern, led by Chelsea Leeder's 15 points. Madison Eschle added in 14 off the bench while Jordan Owens added in 11. Annie Bourne and Katelyn Bartell both added in 10. 

As a team, Southwestern shot 43.4% from the floor, 40% from three point range while holding Blackburn to 24.6% from the field and 15.4% from long range. 

Southwestern improves to 7-3 on the year. They face off with #5 Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon. Wash U is 8-1 on the season. Game time is set for 2 p.m. with live stats and video available for fans unable to make the trip.
