Pirates Survive in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southwestern women's basketball hung on for the win, their third of the season, with a 56-53 win over Schreiner University on Saturday night.

It was a close game throughout the first half as Southwestern retained the lead the entire way but couldn't pull ahead by more than nine points. A three by Jordan Owens just before the break gave Southwestern the nine point lead for the first time and sent SU into the locker room up 35-26.

The Pirates came out of the second half strong and quickly pushed the lead to 15 points, 45-30, with just under 14 to go. SU retained the double-digit lead through the next nine minutes, but then the Mountaineers came roaring back and steadily cut the lead throughout the remainder of the game.

Southwestern was able to stay just ahead as they never relinquished the lead, despite the run by Schreiner, to secure the 56-53 win.

The Pirates shot 39.7% from the field for the game and 20% from three point range while Schreiner was 33.9% from the floor and 22.2% from long range. Southwestern also committed four more turnovers than the Mountaineers and were +6 in rebounds.

Owens led all scorers with 22 points while Bourne added a double-double of 14 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Schreiner's Jasmin Copeland posted 12 points to lead the Mountaineers.

The win improves the Pirates to 3-1 on the season while Schreiner falls to 3-1. The Pirates remain in San Antonio to face Hardin-Simmons University on Sunday at 2 p.m.
