Garcia Paces Pirates to Solid Day at McMurry Classic

ABILENE, Texas - The Southwestern University track and field team competed at the McMurry War Hawk Classic on Friday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium.

"Overall we had a solid meet," said Head Coach Andrew Diehl. "It was a very windy day with gusts over 30mph and it made the races much more tactical."

On the women's side, freshman Sofia Garcia put together a tremendous day, earning a third place finish in the 1500 meter with a time of 5:24.21 while also earning a fifth place finish in the 800 meter at 2:39.59. Junior Trinh Ha placed sixth in the 1500 (5:31.63) and eighth in the 800 (2:45.08).

The 4x100 team of sophomore Jalynn Ashley, sophomore Morgan Gilpin, sophomore Mallory Harkins, and freshman Chelsea Hogue ran a season best 53.53.

Freshman Erin Toro rebroke her school record in the shot put at 10.78m. Ashley was fifth in the triple jump at 10.53m while sophomore Gilpin was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 29.22m.

On the men's side, junior John Hattan earned a second place finish in the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10:25.41 while sophomore Joshua Im was sixth in the 5000 meter with a time of 17:40.24.

Freshman Ty Dunlap, freshman Brian McCutcheon, junior Gregory McDade, and freshman Devin Rosas put together a season best in the 4x100 with a time of 44.42.

Senior Tyler Adams earned a fourth place finish in the hammer at 43.95m while finishing sixth in the javelin at 40.92m. Junior Sam Grubbs added an eighth place finish in the hammer at 41.97m.

"We saw some really stiff competition and teams we probably won't see again this season," said Diehl. "Overall it was a good change of pace and, despite the conditions, we are please with the progress we made this meet."

Southwestern returns to action next Friday as they head back to San Antonio to compete against Trinity.
