Track & Field faces tough competition at Cactus Cup

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Pirate men took seventh place out of nine teams while the women finished ninth against majority upper-level competition at the Cactus Cup on Saturday.

The highlight of the day came on the track as Southwestern went one, two in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Joe Sponsel won the event in 10:40.63 while Philip Davis finished second in 11:30, collectively scoring 18 points for the Pirates.

Paden Williams had a great finish in the 800, taking home sixth place in a time of 1:59.92 for three points.

Lilly Duarte had the best individual finish on the track for the women with a sixth place finish of her own in the 1500, finishing in 4:50.05 as the highest Division III finisher for three points.

Southwestern's relays also scored points on both sides as the men's 4x100 of Alec Bergerson, Rance Thorne, Issa El Hage and Jimmy Brymer collected four points with a seventh place finish in a time of 47.72. The men's 4x400 relay of Bergerson, Williams, El Hage and Brymer secured two points with a 12th place finish of 3:43.52 while on the women's side the 4x100 of Maya Adighibe, Noorie Han, Octivia Marcel and Kimi Prevost also brought home two points with a ninth place finish in 55.43.

The women shined in field events, earning nine points in the javelin. Molly Campbell led with a toss of 28.60m for fourth place. Kimi Prevost was close behind with a throw of 23.84m for sixth place and Adighibe earned an eighth place finish with a 19.59m throw.

Southwestern has a quick turnaround as they head to San Antonio on Friday to compete in the Tiger Relays hosted by Trinity University.
