TYLER, Texas - Weather caused the Southwestern men's tennis team to compete in an abbreviated version of the ITA Regional over the weekend and
SU started out strong with first-year Egan Cornachione winning his first round match in the A draw over Weston Godsey of ETBU. He fell 6-0, 6-1 in the next round to Daniel Budd of UT Tyler who advanced to the quarterfinal round.
Jonathan Sandoval faced stiff competition in his opening round match and fell 6-0, 6-0 to #6 Ryan Spencer of UT Tyler. Sam McCready took on the #10 seed Casey Clark of UT Dallas and also fell 6-0, 6-0. Andy Clarage had a good showing in his opening round again Sean Spiesman of UT Dallas but was unable to close out the match as he fell 6-4, 6-4. Alec Bergerson also dropped his first match, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Jacob Stamps of UMHB.
In the B Draw, Dax Collison, Edward Yu and Jimmy Alleyn all won in their opening round to advance, but eventually lost their next round.
In doubles action, Collison/Clarage were the only competitors in the A Draw and dropped their opening round to Guin/Thompson of Trinity 8-2. On the B Draw side, Sandoval/Bergerson and Cornachione/McCready advanced to the second round but were bested in the second round to end the tournament.
Because of rain, all matches aside from the A Draw main for both singles and doubles were cancelled on late Saturday morning.
Southwestern closes their fall season with a dual match against Howard Payne University in Brownwood on October 6th.
