Tornados steal season opener from Pirates in double overtime

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern men's soccer rallied back from a two-goal deficit to force overtime but were ultimately bested in their season opener 3-2 by Concordia in double overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Concordia's Carl Linn scored the first goal four minutes into the game from 22 yards out
  • CTX added one more on a Southwestern own goal at the 63 minute mark to go up 2-0
  • SU's Jake Swonke capitalized on a Tornado defensive error and scored his first collegiate goal in his first game as a Pirate, cutting the deficit to one with 23 minutes to play
  • Christian Lopez buried a penalty kick in the 89th minute to tie the game and Andres Carreno-Mendez's shot careened off the crossbar with seconds remaining to send the game into overtime
  • After a scoreless first overtime Concordia took the victory off the foot of Fabian Billings in the 102nd minute.
