Men’s soccer advances to semifinals

SEGUIN, Texas – With a 2-1 win over Schreiner on Friday afternoon the Pirates advanced to the SCAC Conference semifinals, facing Colorado College on Saturday.

It was fast and furious opening minutes of the game as Schreiner took an early lead with a goal from Cody Hollingshead in the ninth minute.

Southwestern quickly scored the equalizer, need just over two minutes to make the game 1-1 just 11 minutes in. Andres Carreño-Mendez played a through ball to Michael Oliveras, putting him one-on-one with the keeper. Oliveras calmly collected the pass and beat the keeper easily.

With just seconds remaining in the first half, good fortune shone on the Pirates as Schreiner scored in their own goal to send the Pirates into the locker room up 2-1.

The 2-1 lead would hold throughout the final 45 as neither team was able to put one in the back of the net.

Southwestern led 20-10 in shots while each team had four corners. Travis Carmichael had three saves in the win.

The Pirates improve to 8-11-1 on the year and Schreiner ends their season at 7-10. Southwestern advances to face Colorado College on Saturday at 1:30pm in Seguin.
