First half goals lift Pirates into third

GEORGETOWN, Texas – With a 2-0 win over the University of Dallas the Pirates moved into third place in the SCAC with two games to play.

The Pirates served notice early that they were ready to seize third place in the conference in the early parts of the first half as SU aggressively attacked the Crusaders. It took just over 11 minutes for Southwestern to take control of the game as Christian Lopez played the ball from the 18-yard line to Andres Carreño-Mendez. Carreño-Mendez collected and quickly aimed low, placing the ball perfectly just inside the left post and into the back of the net, putting SU up 1-0 early.

Just moments later Zach Faulkner was just inches from making it a 2-0 lead as his shot careened off the crossbar and out of bounds.

On a quick counter attack the Pirates realized that 2-0 lead as Michael Olivares scored his second goal of the match with another low shot to put SU up 2-0 with 15 minutes remaining in the half.

With a 2-0 lead in hand the Pirates used a steady stream of fresh legs off their deep bench to keep the lead and control of the game in the second half. SU allowed just one solid look at goal the entire 45 minutes, closing out the contest for the win.

Southwestern posted 14 shots while allowing just four while taking four corner kicks. Carmichael had limited action in goal thanks to the strong defensive line, posting just one save on the evening while his counterparts had four saves.

The Pirates move to 6-9-1 on the year and 6-5-1 in the SCAC while Dallas falls to 10-6-1 overall and are also 6-5-1 in conference action. Southwestern holds the tie-breaker after beating Dallas both times this season and move into third place. They remain at home to face Austin College on Sunday for their final home game.
