Carreno-Mendez's goal in double OT gives Pirates SCAC win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Andres Carreno-Mendez scored the game winning goal merely 99 seconds into the second overtime to improve the Pirates to 3-1 in SCAC action.

After a pair of Pirate corner kicks, the first real chance of the half came ten minutes into the first half as the Pirates used a counter attack to get a great look at goal. Christian Lopez played the ball ahead to David Arellano who, after beating a defender, centered the ball to Zack Faulkner just outside the 18. Faulkner's shot went just high of the crossbar and out of harm's way for the Bulldogs.

Faulkner was knocking at the door of the Bulldogs with another blazing shot from 24 yards out, but TLU's starting keeper made the diving save to keep the game scoreless.

They game rolled through the remainder of the first half and into the second scoreless. Southwestern controlled every aspect of the first half, but TLU came out with a renewed focus and turned their intensity up for the second half.

Ten minutes into the frame the Bulldogs saw the payoff as they stunned the Pirates with a goal. Colin Nunley played a long ball from the right sideline and lofted to the boot of Tim Schaffer at the far post who redirected the cross with a one-touch shot into the back of the net.

With a long, lofting shot from the backline, Austin Robinson knotted the game at one a piece. Robinson's shot from 40+ yards out caught the bottom side of the crossbar and fell into goal after it skimmed off of keeper Jonathan Michael's back as he was off-balance after the save attempt.

Both teams had their opportunities to put home the game winner, but neither was able to make it a reality as regulation came to a close. One overtime went by without a goal, but SU needed just over 60 seconds to score the game winner. Carlos Huntley-Jimenez came off the bench in the second overtime to play the ball from the left sideline to Andres Carreno-Mendez streaking towards goal. Carreno-Mendez was already behind the final defender and needed to beat on Michael in goal which he did with ease, playing the ball low and away and into the back of the net for the game winner.

Southwestern trailed 7-3 in corners but were an even 10-10 in shots. Travis Carmichael logged two saves in goal while Michael posted three in the loss.

The Pirates improve to 3-5 on the year and 3-1 in the SCAC, moving into third place in the conference. TLU falls to 3-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the SCAC. Southwestern remains at home to face Schreiner University on Sunday for a noon kickoff.
