Men’s soccer secures win on PK

IRVING, Texas – Zach Faulkner punched home a penalty kick in the 55th minute to hand Southwestern a 1-0 win over the University of Dallas to open SCAC action.

Dallas came out attacking aggressively, blasting off three shots in the first 44 seconds of the match. Southwestern quickly responded with two shots on frame in the next 1:30, but despite all the action the game remained tied heading into halftime.

Less than ten minutes into the second half the Pirates made the most of their opportunity as Faulkner coolly put the ball in the back of the net on a penalty kick after a Dallas foul.

The Crusaders had no answer and couldn't get anything going the remainder of the game as the Pirates controlled the tempo the rest of the way, securing the 1-0 victory.

Southwestern trailed 15-14 in shots but were 6-4 in corner kicks. Travis Carmichael posted three saves in his first win in goal. Andres Carreno-Mendez had five shots on the evening and Faulkner three to lead the Pirates offensively.

SU improves to 1-5 on the year, 1-0 in the SCAC while Dallas falls to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in conference. SU remains on the road to face Austin College on Sunday in Sherman at noon.
