BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — In a game of multiple runs, the Southwestern University Pirates men's lacrosse team fell short by a single goal, losing to the Birmingham-Southern Panthers 13-12 to fall to 1-1 on the season. 

Zac Asbury led the Pirates with three goals and two assists and Kai Knight-Turcan had two goals and two assists but the Pirates' defense surrendered four goals to Peyton Taylor and Southwestern committed 22 turnovers. 

Southwestern struck first on an unassisted goal by Asbury but the Panthers responded with three consecutive Carter McAlpin unassisted goals and a Peyton Taylor goals form Carter McAlpin to take a 4-1 lead. 

Knight-Turcan followed with a goal from Jared Welsh and, after an Asbury goal, found Jack Doloszycki to tie the game at 4-4 before the Panthers closed the quarter with back-to-back unassisted goals within a 10-second span. 

The second quarter was decidedly lower scoring with two Panther goals bookending a trio of Pirate goals, of which two were unassisted. A 3-2 goal advantage in the third quarter put the Panthers up 11-9 heading into the fourth. Asbury assisted on two goals in the fourth quarter and scored on another but Birmingham goalie Matt Quill stopped Everett Barger's shot with 1:05 remaining to seal the victory. 

The Pirates outshot Birmingham-Southern 46-35 and won 19 of 27 face offs. 

Goalie Kyle Kuberski had 13 saves for the Pirates, including seven in the fourth quarter, falling to 1-1 in the Pirates' loss. Southwestern will resume action on the road on Sunday, Feb. 17 at Hendrix University at 12:00 p.m.
