Men’s Lacrosse Drops Final Regular Season Contest

Men’s Lacrosse Drops Final Regular Season Contest

The Southwestern men's lacrosse team continues to inch closer to an upset of conference-leading Colorado College, falling 12-4 in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Sunday.

It was a stalemate through the opening half of the first quarter, but Southwestern got on the board first with a goal from Ross Warkentin, assisted by Tyler Downing. The 1-0 lead was short-lived, however, as Colorado College's Steve Rijo rattled off three goals in the frame to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead through one.

CC added another goal to open the second, but Southwestern's Jackson Timian had the answer with just under five minutes to play to keep SU within striking distance, 4-2. Just before the break, Colorado posted one more on the board to lead by three, 5-2, at halftime.

Colorado came out blazing in the second half and scored three goals in the first six minutes to extend their lead to six, 8-2. Timian once again found the back of the net with 6:27 to play in the third to pull Southwestern within five, 8-3.

Four more Tiger goals in the fourth allowed CC to post a comfortable lead. Carter Cowan, assisted by Nathan Balke, posted the final goal of the game with 2:33 remaining to arrive at the 12-4 final.

AJ Cole recorded 15 saves in goal for Southwestern while CC's Chase Murphy posted six saves in 47 minutes.

SU committed just four more turnovers in the game, but took 25 fewer shots (44-19) and was unable to convert on any of the seven man-up opportunities.

Timian led offensively with two goals while Jacob Freed led the Pirates in ground balls with seven and caused turnovers with four.

The Pirates fall to 7-8 on the year and 3-2 in conference play. They return to Colorado Springs, Colo. on April 27th to face Colorado College in the SCAC Conference Tournament Championship game. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m. CST.
