Pirates' Second Half Surge Falls Short

Pirates' Second Half Surge Falls Short

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern University men's lacrosse put together a great second half effort, out-scoring Trine University 6-3 in the half. The comeback fell short, however, as the Pirates were narrowly defeated 8-7.

The Trine Thunder came out strong to score three first quarter goals while holding SU scoreless. Two more goals in the second quarter and just one by Southwestern's Elliot Kelly gave Trine a 5-1 lead at halftime and seemed poised to run away with the contest.

As has been the case all season, Southwestern adjusted their game plan to orchestrate a comeback and this game was no exception. Jamie Long, assisted by Michael Villa, started things off in the third with a man-up goal two minutes into the quarter. Trine's Adam Martin matched the goal six minutes later before Southwestern closed out the quarter on a scoring spree, punching in two goals in less than a minute. Tyler Downing and Jamie Long's unassisted goals at the end of the third brought SU within two, 6-4, with one quarter remaining.

After a scoreless first five minutes of the final frame the Thunder snuck a goal in to move their lead back to three, 7-4, with nine and a half minutes to go. Jamie Long had the answer, scoring unassisted with a goal in transition bringing the Pirates back to within two with just under five minutes remaining. Trine punched one more in with 2:48 on the clock. Despite having just two and a half minutes to make up the difference Southwestern continued to fight and scored two goals, one by Carter Cowan, assisted by Long and one by Long, in the final two and a half minutes, but ultimately ran out of time to make the win a reality.

Southwestern was outshot by nine, 30-21, but picked up one more ground ball 40-39. The teams split faceoffs evenly but the Pirates committed seven more turnovers in the loss.

Long was an offensvie force for Southwestern, scoring four goals and assisting once for five points. Chris O'Quain recorded ten saves in goal for Southwestern. Dalton Madsen led offensively for Trine with one goal and one assist.

The Pirates continue to search for their first win of the season and fall to 0-4 with the loss. They remain at home to face Drew University on Monday night. Game time is set for 7pm.
