Nationally-Ranked RPI Tops Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates out-scored nationally-ranked RPI 2-0 in the fourth quarter, but the Engineers took the game 18-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Southwestern. The loss drops SU to 3-5 on the year while RPI improves to 3-1.

RPI shot out of the gates and set the tone early, scoring on the first two face-offs of the game. The Engineers mounted a 9-0 lead heading into halftime and continued to build on it through the third quarter.

Jamie Long and Edward Williams teamed up for the first goal of the game for Southwestern with Long stealing the ball from RPI in their own territory and passed to Williams in front of the net to break the ice.

Tyler Downing came streaking down the field to score SU's second goal of the game with ten minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Long added an unassisted goal himself for Southwestern's third goal of the game.

RPI had 53 shots to the Pirates' 10. Southwestern was unable to convert on five man-up opportunities while the Engineers were 1-3.

Chris O'Quain and Donnie Murray split time between the pipes with each recording nine saves on the afternoon.

The Pirates open SCAC conference action on Friday as they face Centre College at 4pm.
