Explosive Start Fizzles Out

Georgetown, Texas - The Pirates dropped their first game at home this season with a 14-5 loss to Trine University on Thursday afternoon.

Southwestern shot out of the gates, scoring four goals in the first quarter and led by two, 4-2 after the first period. SU continued the scoring at the start of the second quarter when Alex Michael found Jamie Long who put the ball in the back of the net just 30 seconds into the period as the Pirates took a three goal lead, 5-2.

Trine answered with two goals before the half to pull within one, 5-4, capitalizing off of Pirate turnovers.

As the second half got underway Southwestern was hit with numerous penalties and Trine took advantage to score seven goals in man-up opportunities in the second half. With three additional goals in the final two frames Trine closed out the 14-5 win.

The Thunder had 58 shots to the Pirates' 15 and narrowly beat SU in groundballs (41-31).

Tyler Downing led the way offensively with two goals scored while Michael recorded two assists. Chris O'Quain and Donnie Murray split time between the pipes and tallied 18 assists.

Southwestern falls to 2-4 on the year and remains at home to face Berry College on Sunday at 1:00 pm
