Southwestern University Pirates football senior defensive end Garrett Womack was named the American Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Pirates' 47-7 season-opening win over the Sewanee Tigers. 

Womack pressured Sewanee's quarterback with four tackles, including three for a loss of 11 yards and two sacks, setting the tone for a Pirate defense that limited Sewanee to just 195 yards of total offense and less than 100 yards in the first half. 

The senior from Austin, Texas now has 10 career sacks and 51 total career tackles, including 17.5 for a loss of a combined 90 yards. 

Southwestern will take advantage of an early bye week this weekend to prepare for its conference opener against Louisiana College at home on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 6:00 p.m.
