Southwestern football position preview: Special teams

Southwestern football position preview: Special teams

As we head toward the Southwestern University football season opener on Sept. 5, at Hardin-Simmons, we will preview the squad, by position. Today, we take a look at the special teams with head coach Joe Austin.

Aug. 27 – Offensive line
Aug. 28 – Defensive line
Aug. 29 – Running backs
Aug. 30 – Linebackers
Aug. 31 – Wide receivers/tight ends
Sept. 1 – Defensive backs
Sept. 2 – Special teams
Sept. 3 – Quarterbacks

While Laith Tucker has locked up the punting duties for the Pirates, he is trying to secure the placekicker position, as well. Tucker is receiving a push from Tyler Adams, as Southwestern heads in to the final days of practice before its season opener.

Caleb Brimmage and Doc Woodson also will be key figures on special teams, with Brimmage handling the snapping duties and Woodson serving as the holder on field goals and extra points.

The return game will be built around Nik Kelly, who will be an explosive punt returner. Alan Peralta could also see some time in the punt return game.
