Trio of Pirates named to SCAC First Team on gridiron

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – A trio of Pirate football players earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-First Team honors with five others earning honorable mention honors in the first college football season for Southwestern University in over 60 years the league office announced Tuesday.

The Pirate defense saw two individuals earn first team accolades as Justin Broussard earned his nod after leading the SCAC in sacks and finishing second in the league in tackles for a loss. He was joined by Tyler Frisby as both first-year players finished in the top 10 in the league in tackles with Frisby finishing with 64 and Broussard with 68. Broussard was a first-year defensive end from Beaumont, Texas, while Frisby is linebacker from Justin, Texas.

First-year wide receiver Matt Gillen earned the Pirates lone first team honor on the offensive side of the ball. The Coppell, Texas, native finished in the top 10 in receptions per game and receiving yards per game emerging in the second half of the season to record back-to-back 100-yard receiving games.

Earning SCAC Honorable Mention honors for the Pirates was Brandon Fleischmann, Colten Shea and Taylor Stephens on the offensive side of the ball, while Alex Tyson and Alex Lee earned honors on defense.

Shea, from Georgetown, led the Pirates in receiving on the season with 49 catches and 673 yards before an injury slowed the first-year receiver during the second half. Fleischmann, a native of Roanoke, Texas, and Stephens, a first-year tight end from Goldthwaite, also played important roles in the Pirates passing game. The duo finishing with more than 170 yards each and added a touchdown a piece.

Tyson and Lee were both forces on an impressive Pirate defense that featured almost exclusively first-year players. Tyson a native of Houston finished with 26 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss. Lee added 45 tackles on the year including 5.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks in his first season from Cedar Park.
