THE GAME

Southwestern continues to look for its first win of 2013 as winless and first-year program Oklahoma Baptist heads to Birkelbach Field. Both teams begin the rebirth of football as the Bison returned to the gridiron for the first time since 1940.

The Pirates were shutout for the first time last week, but will look to get the offense back on track against the Bison. After fighting back from early deficits, the Pirates will try to get on the board early against the Bison. With one of the top passing offenses in the SCAC, Southwestern will look to its talented group of wide receivers to help secure the first Pirate victory since 1950.

THE SERIES

This will be the first ever meeting between Southwestern and Oklahoma Baptist.

THE COACHES

Joe Austin (Concordia-St. Paul '01)

Austin is in his fifth year as a head coach after spending the previous four seasons at Hanover College where he led the Panthers to back-to-back second place finishes in the HCAC. He was also the offensive coordinator at the University of Dubuque after spending time at Augsburg College and his alma mater, Concordia-St. Paul.

Chris Jensen (Oklahoma '92)

Jensen also is in the process of rebuilding a football program at Oklahoma Baptist. After starting the football program at Southmoore High School (Okla.) in 2008, Jensen begins his first year in the college ranks. He quickly helped turn Southmoore into a playoff contender and was named Oklahoma 6A-1 Coach of the Year in 2009. Jensen was a varsity letterman on the offensive line at Oklahoma.

STANDING STRONG

A pair of defensive players for the Pirates rank in the top 10 in the SCAC in tackles (Tyler Frisby and Justin Broussard) while Broussard ranks second in sacks. Broussard has five sacks through five games, while Frisby's 33 tackles rank 7th in the conference.

1ST QUARTER STRUGGLES

Getting off to a slow start has hindered the Pirates through the early portion of the schedule. Although the Pirates proved they can fight back, Southwestern has not scored in the first quarter while opponents have combined for 58 first quarter points. Southwestern has scored 26 second quarter points and 21 third quarter points, but obviously playing from behind is tough.

RECORD BREAKER

Wide Receiver Colten Shea broke one SCAC record and nearly a second as the Pirates made their highly anticipated football return against Texas Lutheran. Shea set a single-game record for all-purpose yards with 367 yards after finishing the night with 258 yards receiving and 109 yards on six kickoff returns. He was nine yards shy of the SCAC single-game mark for receiving yards as he had scores of 68-yards and 40-yards.

A WIN FOR THE PIRATES…

A win for the Pirates would give Southwestern its first win of 2013 and the first win in the all-time series with Oklahoma Baptist at 1-0 … Southwestern would win its first home game of the season and first since 1950 … it would make the Pirates 155-208-35 all-time

A LOSS FOR THE PIRATES…

A loss would be the Pirates sixth of the season and move their record to 0-6 … it would make the Pirates 0-1 all-time vs. Oklahoma Baptist … It would also make the Pirates 154-209-35 all-time

A LOOK AHEAD …

Southwestern continues with the final two home games of 2013 with a bye week sandwiched between Trinity and Austin College … The meeting with Trinity will be the first since 1941 while the Pirates and 'Roos will meet in their second game of the year … The Nov. 2 matchup with Austin will count in the SCAC standings while the Pirates and Tigers meeting Nov. 9 in San Antonio will be the official SCAC game … Homecoming is also schedule for the final home game, Nov. 3 vs. Austin College … The Pirates end their season with the final two games on the road at Trinity (Nov. 9) and Southern Virginia (Nov. 16)
