SU Football to Sport the Play for Rex Sticker

SU Football to Sport the Play for Rex Sticker

Several members of the Southwestern University Pirate football team will be wearing a special helmet decal featuring the Play for Rex logo as part of the Pediatric Awareness Month and in remembrance of Rex Fleming.

Fleming, the late son of Abilene Christian Associate Athletic Director Lance Fleming, passed away last November after a lengthy battle with a brain tumor. The 10-year-old's spirit and the way he handled his fight was an inspiration to many in the Abilene-area community. The Fleming family has had a long-standing relationship with current Southwestern assistant sports information director, Phillip Dowden.

Several Pirates will join with Abilene Christian, Hardin-Simmons and McMurry Universities along with Abilene, Cooper, Wylie and Fort Worth Christian high schools in wearing the P4X gold ribbon decal for the month of September.

While Rex was fighting his disease, the P4X logo (created and designed by ACU alumni relations officer Grant Boone and ACU senior graphic designer Todd Mullins) stood for "Pray 4 Rex." Now it has taken on a new meaning as it was changed to "Play 4 Rex" in deference to Rex's passion for sports. "Play 4 Rex" could also mean that whatever one does in life, do that activity the way Rex did -- with passion, with purpose and with love.

The ribbons were purchased by the P4X Foundation, which was established earlier this year in memory of Fleming, who was the son of ACU associate director of athletics Lance Fleming and his wife, Jill.

The P4X Foundation has been established to raise money to, among other things, provide iPod Touches and Apple iTunes gift cards to pediatric cancer patients at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth. Assistance from the P4X Foundation will not stop there as it has plans to work in many ways to help children and families battling cancer.
