THE GAME

The Pirate football team heads to Oklahoma this week in search of their first win of the young season, but will face a very good NAIA team in Bacone College (1-1). The Warriors have one of the top offensive units in NAIA and sit just outside the latest Top 25 poll.

After shaking first half jitters the Pirates proved they could not only move the ball on offense, but the defense made important third down stops while adding two interceptions. With growing confidence there should be no doubt Head Coach Joe Austin's squad will continue to improve on Saturday.

THE SERIES

This will be the first ever meeting between Southwestern and Bacone College.

THE COACHES

Joe Austin (Concordia-St. Paul '01)

Austin is in his fifth year as a head coach after spending the previous four seasons at Hanover College. He helped rebuild a team that had just two wins when he arrived and guided the Panthers to back-to-back second place finishes in the HCAC. He was also the offensive coordinator at the University of Dubuque after spending time at Augsburg College and his alma mater, Concordia-St. Paul.

Trevor Rubly (Central Missouri)

Rubly enters his third season at the helm of the Warriors. Prior to becoming the head coach at Bacone, he served on the coaching staff at the University of Missouri for two seasons after coaching the wide receivers at Cisco Junior College in Cisco, Texas.

RECORD BREAKER

Wide Receiver Colten Shea broke one SCAC record and nearly a second as the Pirates made their highly anticipated football return Saturday. Shea set a single-game record for all-purpose yards with 367 yards after finishing the night with 258 yards receiving and 109 yards on six kickoff returns. He was nine yards shy of the SCAC single-game mark for receiving yards as he had scores of 68-yards and 40-yards.

SHEA EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Colten Shea's performance on Saturday did not go unnoticed as the wide receiver was named SCAC Offensive Player of the Week. Shea grabbed the week one honors after the aforementioned performance along with Ethan Powell of Texas Lutheran earning Defensive honors, and Matthew Kennemer of Trinity earning Special Teams accolades.

A WIN FOR THE PIRATES…

A win for the Pirates would give Southwestern its first win of 2013 and a 1-0 all-time record vs. Bacone College … Southwestern would pick up its first road win of the season … it would make the Pirates 155-204-35 all-time

A LOSS FOR THE PIRATES…

A loss would be the Pirates fourth straight loss dating back to the final two games of the 1950 season … it would make the Pirates 0-1 all-time vs. Bacone College … It would make the Pirates 154-205-35 all-time

A LOOK AHEAD …

Pirate football returns to Birkelbach Field next week vs. American Southwest Conference foe, East Texas Baptist … ETBU was idle in their first week of the season as they travel to SCAC member Austin College … Southwestern will also face new "new" football teams that have also been reinstated when they take on Hendrix College (Sept. 28) and Oklahoma Baptist (Oct. 12) … Hendrix picked up a win in week one over Westminster (Mo.) on a last-second field goal while Oklahoma Baptist currently sits at 0-2 (more on SU opponents on page 8) … Homecoming for the Pirates has also been set for Nov. 2 vs. Austin College … The Pirates will play three conference games this season, as their Nov. 2 game vs. Austin College and Nov. 9 meeting at Trinity will not count as official SCAC games

Head Coach Joe Austin and the team will continue from the west end of the tailgating area closest to the stadium to the locker room area. Fans are encouraged to gather along this area to wish the Pirates 'Good Luck' in their upcoming game.
