SEGUIN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates men's basketball season ended in upset, losing 91-84 to the scorching No. 5-seed University of Dallas, who upset Schreiner and Southwestern to advance to their first SCAC Tournament championship game.

Dallas shot a scorching 61.1 percent in the first half, hitting 11-for-18 from the field. The Crusaders were relentless behind the guard-forward duo of Dustin Mathis and John Russell, who combined for 24 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

Two of Mathis' three made baskets in the first half were 3-pointers and he got to the free-throw line seven times, hitting six for his 14 first-half points.

Brandon Alexander paced the Pirates in the first half, scoring 14 of his game-high 29 points, hitting 5-for-11 from the field. That and 12 forced turnovers kept Southwestern in the game early, scoring four points in the final 10 seconds of the half to cut an early deficit to 42-40 at the break.

Alexander and Joel Martinez provided the firepower in the second half, combining for 28 of the Pirates' 44 points. Alexander was strong with the ball, hitting 2-for-3 from the field and getting to the free-throw line 10 times, hitting all of them. Martinez struggled from the field in the second-half (3-for-10) but hit two 3-pointers and got to the free-throw line six times (hitting five) to score 13 of his 18 points.

Dallas responded by hitting 6-for-8 from the free-throw line in the second half, where Michael Wambsganss scored 16 points, hitting 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the 3-point line. Jai Love contributed 13 second-half points, hitting 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.

Alexander scored his 29 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including 3-for-8 from the free-throw line and all 12 of his free-throw attempts. He also tied Jake Holmes for the team-high with six rebounds. Martinez was 7-for-9 from the free-throw line with two steals. Andrew Puhl and Luke Hicks each had nine points.

Four Crusaders finished in double figures, led by Wambsganss and Mathis, who each scored 19. John Russell had 15 points and five rebounds and Love had 17 points with four assists off the bench.

With the loss, the Pirates finish the season 14-12.
