#3 seed Pirates set for post-season rumble in Dallas

#3 seed Pirates set for post-season rumble in Dallas

The 2015 SCAC Men's Basketball Championship match-ups have been set and the Pirates enter the tournament as the #3 seed, facing #6 Schreiner University on Friday at 7pm.

This Head Coach Janson Hightower's first trip to the post season at the helm for Southwestern, but the Pirates are no stranger to the tournament as this is SU's ninth trip to the post season in 13 years.

The Mountaineers and Pirates faced off twice this season already with Southwestern winning both contests. The Pirates defeated Schreiner 74-54 on their home court before edging out the Mountaineers by seven in the Robertson Center earlier in the month.

Southwestern is a team that can get hot quick and will be a tough match-up with their highly versatile and athletic players and deep bench. The Pirates average 67.6 points per game, shooting 41.4% from the floor and 36% from three point range. Southwestern has struggled from the line at times this year and has been the difference maker in more than a handful of games. SU shoots just 66.3% from the charity stripe and will need to take advantage of those easy points to beat Schreiner.

Zack Whitlock (10.5), Ryan Ogden (10.3) and Chris Lee (10.2) lead Southwestern in points per game, but five more SU players average five or more points per game so anyone can be the hero on Friday night.

The Mountaineers average 68.3% from the floor while shooting 45% from the floor and 34.9% from three point range and are led by Wes Miller's 11.1 points per game. Stevan Guerrero averages 10.8 points per game from the point guard position while five more Mountaineers average seven or more points.

In addition to free throw shooting, rebounding will be huge for the Pirates. Southwestern averages 36 rebounds per game while Schreiner averages 34.6 and is outrebounding opponents by over five per game.

This is the 24th all-time meeting between the two schools with Southwestern owning a 21-12 advantage. Game time is set for 7 p.m.  on Friday at the University of Dallas.
