Pirates fend off Tigers in SCAC nail biter

Pirates fend off Tigers in SCAC nail biter

Trinity fought back from 11 points down with 3:42 to play to make a game of it, but Southwestern prevailed with a 60-54 win at home on Friday night.

The Pirates were white-hot out of the gate, draining their first three shots. Trinity rallied to take the lead as SU went cold. Southwestern was held to just one field goal in nearly 10 minutes of action, allowing Trinity to lead 13-12 with six minutes to go in the half.

To close the half Southwestern hit a hot streak and took a seven point lead into the break, 26-19. Chris Lee led with 10 points in the frame while Zach Whitlock added in eight.

The lead proved to be enough as the Pirates kept the Tigers at an arm's length through the first ten minutes of the second frame.

Trinity refused to go quietly as Matt Selling's three from the top of the key pulled TU within four, 51-47, with just under two minutes to play.

TU continued to claw their way back and got another three from Selling, his third in the final two minutes, to cut the Pirates' lead to two, 56-54, with 37 seconds remaining. Trinity wouldn't score again, however, as Southwestern took care of business on the defensive end and from the free throw line to seal the win.

Lee ended the game with 18 points to lead all scorers while Whitlock posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Selling ended the game with 14 points to lead the Tigers.

Southwestern shot 30.8% from the floor and three point range and committed just seven turnovers on the evening. Trinity went 30.8% from the floor and 36.4% from three point range, but managed just 53.8% from the free throw line.

The Pirates improve to 12-7 on the year and 7-3 in the SCAC while Trinity falls to 2-19 overall and 1-9 in conference action. Southwestern hosts Schreiner for the SCAC game of the week on Saturday at 6 p.m.
