Men’s basketball resumes winning ways with great defensive effort

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern held UMHB to 15 points below their season average and just 37.5% from the floor to earn their first win at home, 62-58.

Southwestern started shaky as the Crusaders used points in transition to go up 17-7 with ten minutes to play in the first half. Travis Kurtz's layup broke the six minute scoring drought, but the Pirates weren't able to make up much ground the rest of the half as they trailed by nine, 33-24, at the break.

In the second half, UMHB's lead grew to 13, 48-35, with 13:27 to play before Southwestern began to steadily chip away at the lead with outstanding defense. Offensively, SU got a shot in the arm off the bench from Benjamin Stiver who entered the game and drained his first three, three-pointers.

Sean Myers' duck in with just under five to play pulled SU within on, 51-50, and after a tough defensive stand SU took the lead for the first time, 52-51, on Michael Cantu's drive down the lane.  UMHB regained the lead from the free throw line but, only momentarily, as Stiver hit his third three to put Southwestern up 55-53 with 3:43 remaining.

Southwestern never lost control of the game as their defense took over and held UMHB to five points in the final four minutes.

Stiver led the Pirates with 12 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from three point range. As a team, SU shot 41.8% from the floor and were even in rebounds 36-36. Myers was all over the boards grabbing 11 rebounds and posted his first double-double of the season with 10 points. James Allen led the Crusaders with 16 points.

SU improves to 3-2 on the season with the win while UMHB falls to 1-1.  They take a much deserved break for the holiday before returning to action on December 4th as they open SCAC conference action against rival Trinity in San Antonio.
