53-point second half sparks Pirate win

ABILENE, Texas  — Behind a double-double from Blake Scott the Southwestern men's basketball team posted 53 second half points to win 79-75 over Hardin Simmons University.

Hardin-Simmons put together a 21-6 run in the first half to lead by 18, 32-14, and maintained a strong advantage over the Pirates heading into the break. SU trailed 42-26 as the halftime buzzer sounded.

As the second half got underway the Pirates began to methodically chip away at the Cowboy lead. HSU maintained a ten point advantage with just over 11 minutes to play, but Southwestern cut it to four with an 8-2 run over the next two minutes.

Hardin-Simmons briefly took the lead back with 7:42 remaining, but the Pirates snatched it back with and 18-2 run that lasted over five minutes and held off HSU the rest of the way.

Southwestern shot 58.8 percent in the second half after shooting just 27.6 percent in the first half. HSU shot 32.3 percent in the second half and just 38.6 percent in the game. The Pirates won the rebounding battle with a 44-41 margin and converted on 79.2% (19-24) of their free throws while the Cowboys went 12-22 (54.5%)

Scott posted his first double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Sean Myers added in 12 points as did Chase Kocher. Derrick Jefferson led all scorers with 24 points for the Cowboys.

The Pirates improve to 1-1 with the win and HSU starts out 0-1. SU looks to make it two in a row as they  head to Seguin to face Texas Lutheran University in a non-conference game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
