Southwestern University Pirates baseball pitcher John Sparks was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Pitcher of the Week for his performance against the Sul Ross State Lobos on Feb. 15.

Sparks entered the game in the top of the second with the Pirates trailing 4-1 and bases loaded with two outs, then promptly struck out Sul Ross State cleanup hitter Richard Bailey to stop the bleeding.

The sophomore transfer from Washington College pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, retiring 10 of the 13 hitters faced, giving up just one hit and one walk with one hit batter while striking out seven as the Pirates rallied to give Sparks his first win of the season.

Southwestern took both games during Saturday's doubleheader to take the three-game series against Sul Ross State 2-1. The Pirates will travel to play the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, Feb 18 at 6:00 p.m.
