A Pair of Home Runs Lift Baseball Over Dallas

IRVING, Texas – Colton Hunter pitched a complete game and the Southwestern University Pirates baseball team swept its series with the University of Dallas, winning Game 3 by a score of 5-3.

The Pirates struck first, scoring in the top of the second inning on a leadoff homerun from Colby Schmidt to left field. Dallas responded in the bottom of the inning, scoring Michael Jaquez on a wild pitch.

Southwestern retook the lead in the top of the third with Schmidt hitting a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Hayden Craig, who reached on a leadoff single, advanced to second on a throwing error, and reached third on a Byron Dowdell II walk.

Dallas took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Mark Peterson grounded out into a double play with bases loaded, scoring Jordan Stickler from third. Josh Abalos scored on the next at-bat when Jessup Scott reached on an error.

Dowdell put the Pirates up for good in the top of the fifth, sending a three-run homerun over the leftfield fence, scoring Daniel Montgomery Jr., who lead the inning off with a walk, and Cole Kelly, who singled to left field.

Hunter and the Pirates' defense carried Southwestern the rest of the way. Hunter retired 27 of the 38 batters he faced, giving up nine hits with three runs—two of which were earned—with a walk and eight strikeouts to improve to 5-2 on the season.

The Pirates' six hits were scattered amongst six different hitters with Dowdell scoring three RBI and Schmidt add two with both hitting a homerun.

With the win, the Pirates improve 22-14 on the season and 9-6 in conference. Southwestern will travel to play Howard Payne University on Tuesday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m., then closeout its regular season with a three-game home series against Centenary on Friday, April 26 and Saturday April, 27.
