Pirates Drop Conference Opening Series Two Games to One

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates baseball team dropped a second consecutive game to Schreiner University by one run, losing 4-3 in Game 3 of the three-game series, giving up two unearned runs.

Schreiner struck early, getting a two-out RBI single by Jeffrey Williams followed by a RBI-single by Reece Hohhertz for a 2-0 lead.

The Pirates tied the game in the top of the fifth with a RBI-double by Colby Schmidt to left center and another by Ted Lobkowicz to right center.

Schreiner retook the lead immediately with Williams scoring Ortiz—who reached on an error—on a groundout in the bottom of the inning.

Byron Dowdell II singled to left field, scoring Lobkowicz in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game again. Williams punished the Pirates again, reaching first on an error and scoring Ortiz.

Benjamin Ludwig started for the Pirates, pitching five innings and giving up three runs with two earned on four hits, two walks and three strikeouts. Travis Harvey pitched three innings, giving up a run on one hit and one walk to pick up the loss.

Southwestern drops to 10-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play. The Pirates will hit the road on Tuesday, March 19 for a game against Texas-Dallas at 2:00 p.m.
