Baseball Puts Together Seven Runs in the Eighth To Take Series Against Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates baseball team closed out its series with the Sul Ross State Lobos with an offensive explosion, winning 12-3 to take the three-game series 2-1. 

It was a pitcher's duel through the first few innings with the Lobos striking first in the bottom of the first on a Chris York RBI single to right field, scoring Tim Johnson, who was put into scoring position on an error.

The Pirates broke through in the top of the fourth, getting a solo home run from Byron Dowdell II to left center and an unearned run later in the inning for a 2-1 lead. 

Southwestern tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning, getting two unearned runs and a RBI single from Chase Thinge, scoring Ethan Hallmark. The Lobos closed the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of two Southwestern errors to score two runs on two hits. 

The Pirates put together eight hits in a seven-run eighth inning to break the game open. Seth Sparks hit a RBI double to left center, scoring Hallmark. After a Thinge single, Hayden Craig scored Sparks on a RBI-single through the left side. 

Southwestern strung together five more consecutive singles to score four more runs, then go a sacrifice fly RBI from Hallmark to score Dowdel, going through the order in one inning. 

Sparks finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored and Hallmark also contributed two RBI with one hit and a walk. Dowdell was 2-for-5 with three runs scored, a walk, and the home run. The Pirates had 17 hits in 41 at-bats with 10 RBI and there walks. 

Starting pitcher Colton Hunter pitched eight innings for the Pirates, facing 31 batters and giving up seven hits, three runs (two earned), and striking out seven. Travis Harvey took over in the ninth, retiring all three batters he faced with one strikeout. 

The Pirates improve to 2-1 on the season and will host McMurry University next weekend for a three-game series starting with a single game on Friday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m., and a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 23 starting at 1:00 p.m.
