Pirates split doubleheader, win nightcap in 11 innings

IRVING, Texas - Southwestern split a doubleheader against Dallas on Saturday. The Pirates dropped the opener 8-2, but rallied to post a 5-4 win in 11 innings to even the series.

Southwestern (17-14, 6-5 SCAC) trailed 4-1 in the nightcap, but scored two runs in the fourth and one in the ninth to force extra frames.

Austyn Laird started the 11th with a double. After being moved to second on a groundout and third on an infield singles, Laird scored the go-ahead run after Jason McCormack put the ball in play.

Laird, who entered the game in the bottom of the 10th as a relief pitcher, struck out the side in the final panel to secure his first career win on the mound.

The right-hander ended up with five strikeouts in 1.2 stanzas out of the bullpen.

The Pirates, who have won five of their last six games, will go for the series win Sunday against the Crusaders. The rubber game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
